Although not as widely discussed as female infertility, male infertility is almost equally prevalent. Here are a few reasons why men experience infertility.
Sperm and Semen Issues
The most common cause of infertility in men is low-quality semen. This can be due to low sperm count or no sperm at all. In some cases, the problem arises due to a mobility issue of the sperm. Lastly, it is possible for sperm to be unusual or abnormal sometimes which makes it hard for it to move or fertilize with an egg.
Testicular Issues
Inflammation of the testicles caused due to epididymitis or sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhoea or HIV can interfere with sperm production. Tumours in the male reproductive organs or pituitary gland can affect male fertility. Birth defects that cause one or two undescended testicles can reduce fertility in men significantly.
Ejaculation Disorders
Some men experience ejaculation problems that can make it difficult for them to complete the sexual act. Although for several couples, this can be resolved by sex therapy or IVF.
Other Reasons
According to research, there are a lot of other factors that affect fertility in men such as drug use, alcohol use, weight, heavy metal exposure or overheating of the testicles. In some cases, Celiac disease can cause male infertility. Chromosomal defects like Klinefelter’s syndrome (hypogonadism), Kallmann’s syndrome and cystic fibrosis can leave men infertile.
