When can I have a 4D baby scan?

You can have a 4D baby scan between 24 and 30 weeks. Many parents find the earlier side of this window can help with clearer views, but baby’s position on the day will always influence image clarity.

How clear are 4D scans?

We use high-spec equipment to capture clear, detailed HD 4D images. Clarity can still depend on your baby’s position on the day, but our team will always do their best—and if we can’t get clear images, we’ll offer a free rescan.

What’s the difference between a 3D and 4D scan?

A 3D scan shows still (static) images of your baby. A 4D scan is like a live video during the appointment, so you can watch your baby’s movements in real time.

What does BPM mean in the heartbeat view?

BPM means beats per minute—the number of times your baby’s heart beats in one minute. During the scan you can see the heartbeat and the BPM reading.

What if baby’s position makes it hard to get clear images?

Sometimes baby’s position can affect the view. If we can’t capture clear images during your appointment, we’ll offer a free rescan.

Are 4D baby scans safe?

4D scans use ultrasound (sound waves, not radiation). Scans are carried out by qualified professionals and performed using appropriate settings and scan time to obtain clear views.

You can have a 4D baby scan between 24 and 30 weeks. For many parents, earlier in this window can give clearer images. Baby is often a little less tucked in and the placenta may be positioned in a way that helps the view.
We use brand-new, high-spec equipment to capture clear, detailed HD 4D images. Image clarity can still depend on your baby’s position on the day but our team will always do their best, and if we can’t get clear images, we’ll offer a free rescan.
4D scans use the same imaging technique as regular ultrasound scans and have been shown to be completely safe for mother and baby alike. The intensity of the sound waves are the same as those on 2D scans, using echoes to create images.
A 3D scan shows still, static images of your baby. A 4D scan is like a live video, so you can watch your baby’s movements in real time during the scan.
You do not need a full bladder for attending scanning appointments from 19 weeks onwards.
4D scans are very accurate, especially when performed in the 3rd trimester when the baby’s individual features are now present and formed.
Your 4D scan will not detect abnormalities that your baby may have. They are high-definition, detailed motion pictures. Abnormalities are best detected during 2D, routine ultrasound appointments.
When you have an anterior placenta, it will be lying over the baby’s face which makes it difficult to get clear pictures.
We tend to use 4D scans to focus on your baby’s face during your 4D scan, but we can do a gender reveal during your 4D scanning appointment if you want, but we’ll switch to 2D to do that.
We offer a free rescan on another day to achieve a 4D viewing of the baby in the cases we can’t get a clear image the first time.
If you’re expecting twins, we would recommend coming for a 4D scanning appointment before 27 weeks, so they have enough wriggle room around the placenta still.
You will see all the imaging and video from your 4D scan during your appointment.
You will get 5 standard-sized prints of your images, 2 keyrings or 2 magnets and all the digital images as well as the video of the scan emailed to you after your appointment.
